Definition
Accreditation: It is the proceeding whereby subjects studied and passed in a Mexican institution are validated in another Mexican institution. At Tecnológico de Monterrey this proceeding currently requires an equivalence agreement issued by the Ministry of Public Education.
Revalidation: It is the proceeding whereby subjects studied and passed in a foreign institution are validated in Mexican institution. At Tecnológico de Monterrey this proceeding currently requires a revalidation agreement issued by the Ministry of Public Education.
Substitution: It is the proceeding whereby a student is granted authorization to study a subject that is not a part of the curriculum he applied to be admitted to, instead of another subject. This authorization is granted based on the student’s academic and/or professional history.
Transferal: It is the proceeding whereby subjects studied and passed in a Tecnológico de Monterrey’s campus are validated in another Tecnológico de Monterrey’s campus.
Admission of students
Article 1.
In order to be admitted in the postgraduate programs of the Virtual University, applicants must:
| a) |
Meet the legal requirements that are currently in force in Mexico. |
| b) |
Have completed a bachelor’s degree program or an equivalent to the ones offered by Tecnológico de Monterrey and preceded by senior high school or an equivalent. |
| c) |
Have a general average in final bachelor grades equal or above eighty in a zero to one hundred scales, or its equivalent in other scales. |
| d) |
Take the admission exam required by Tecnológico de Monterrey and meet the standards set forth by the Virtual University for the intended program. |
| e) |
Meet the requirements for admission set forth for the chosen program. |
Article 2.
Students wishing to broaden their knowledge in a specific area of study, may be admitted as special students, provided they have accredited full postgraduate studies or they have completed the bachelor’s program and their professional performance warrants admission. Such cases must be reviewed and decided upon by the director of School Services and the director of the program the subject belongs to.
Studies conducted as a special student shall not be officially recognized. A student wishing to remain enrolled as a special student must request confirmation to do so from the Office of School Services for every period.
Article 3.
Applicants admitted must accredit - either by submitting certificates for prior studies or through examinations - the minimum knowledge required by the Virtual University for the intended program. In case the student chooses to take the exams, he may do so only once and solely prior to the first time the student enrolls. If the abovementioned knowledge is not accredited, the students must take and pass the courses offered by the Virtual University for that purpose.
Article 4.
Students enrolled on one of Tecnológico de Monterrey’s campuses, who wish to be transferred to the Virtual University in order to pursue a program, shall be admitted provided they meet the standards set forth by the Virtual University for the intended program.
Article 5.
In order to switch to a different academic program, the applicant must meet the requirements for admission for the new academic program he is applying for.
Article 6.
Students discharged from a Virtual University program on the grounds of poor academic performance shall not be readmitted into another Virtual University postgraduate program.
Article 7.
Students discharged from any Tecnológico de Monterrey’s campuses on the grounds of poor performance shall not be readmitted into another Virtual University’s postgraduate program.
Article 8.
The cases that are not provided for in the articles in this chapter shall be reviewed and a decision shall be made by the program director and the School Services director.
Revalidations, accreditations and transferals
Article 9.
Postgraduate courses taken and passed in a foreign or Mexican institution may be revalidated or accredited upon request by the applicant, pursuant to the articles in this section.
Article 10.
Only those subjects studied in institutions that are officially recognized by the Ministry of Public Education may be revalidated or accredited.
Article 11.
Only those subjects which contents and length are equivalent to the ones delivered by Tecnológico de Monterrey may be revalidated or accredited.
Article 12.
Only those subjects for which the student achieved a passing grade pursuant to the policies of the institution where the subjects were studied and which grades are also acceptable pursuant to the standards set forth by the revalidation and accreditation committee may be revalidated or accredited.
Article 13.
If the student completed a part of a postgraduate program, up to 50 per cent of the subjects comprising such curriculum may be revalidated or accredited.
Article 14.
Those subjects studied in another institution while the student was enrolled in Tecnológico de Monterrey may not be revalidated or accredited.
Article 15.
Any courses taken and passed at any Tecnológico de Monterrey campus may be transferred.
Article 16
Once the first academic period of a student has been completed after study revalidation or accreditation took place, the study revalidation or accreditation agreement may not be amended.
Article 17.
If the student holds a postgraduate degree, only up to 25 per cent of the subjects studied may be accredited or transferred in order to get another degree of the same level.
Article 18.
Upon request by the student, subjects can be substituted from his curriculum if doing so is academically justifiable. However, each subject must be replaced by another one. Subject substitution shall be decided upon by the revalidation and accreditation committee.
Article 19.
The cases that are not provided for in the articles in this chapter shall be reviewed and a decision shall be made by the revalidation and accreditation committee, which consists of the program director and the School Services director.
School periods
Article 20.
The courses comprising the postgraduate program are delivered in regular school periods (semi-annually or quarterly) according to Tecnológico de Monterrey’s official calendar.
Article 21.
The Virtual University offers intensive courses for some subjects in the semi-annual and/or quarterly postgraduate programs. Intensive courses comprise a number of units equal to those of semi-annual or quarterly courses, as applicable.
Enrollment in regular periods
Article 22.
The right to enrollment is limited to…
| a) |
Those students who have been in a graduate program and concluded the previous school period without being discharged on the grounds of poor school performance |
| b) |
Those students who have been admitted into a graduate program by the Office of School Services. |
Students who did not complete the enrollment procedure on the dates set forth by the Virtual University will be deemed to have waived their right to enrollment.
Article 23.
Students are responsible for enrolling. Enrollment is governed by the following rules.
| a) |
All students must follow the curriculum for their academic program as approved at the time of enrollment. If a student falls behind in his curriculum due to his/her performance at school or for failure to enroll during one or more academic periods, he/she shall be subject to any modifications made to the corresponding curriculum. |
| b) |
In order to enroll on any subject, students are required to have fulfilled the academic requirements set forth for that subject. |
Article 24.
At Tecnológico de Monterrey, students are not allowed to enroll on two or more programs simultaneously.
Article 25.
Students may enroll on up to 24 units for a regular school period without a special authorization. Students may be authorized to enroll on up to 48 units if they wish to do so or if they are enrolled on a curriculum requiring so. Exception cases shall be authorized by the program’s director provided the student meets the following conditions:
| a) |
Having enough available time to embark on the number of units he/she wishes to enroll on and, in case the student has a job, he/she shall submit a letter stating that the student’s workload is such that he/she will be able to allocate the amount of time required for studying. The above shall be verified by the Virtual University coordinator for the corresponding campus or site. |
| b) |
Having an accumulative grade average equal or greater than 85, in a zero to one hundred scale or its equivalency, during their postgraduate studies in the Virtual University, or in the previous academic level for newly enrolled students. |
Enrollment on intensive courses
Article 26.
Intensive courses, just as semi-annual and quarterly courses, are governed by these academic Regulations.
Article 27.
Students may enroll on up to 12 units (one subject) for an intensive school period without a special authorization. Students may be authorized to enroll on up to 24 units (two subjects) if they wish to do so or if they are enrolled on a curriculum requiring so. These exception cases shall be authorized by the program’s director provided students meet the following conditions:
| a) |
Having enough available time to embark on the number of units they wish to enroll on and, in case students have a job, they shall submit a letter stating that the student’s workload is such that they will be able to allocate the amount of time required by study. The above shall be verified by the Virtual University coordinator for the corresponding campus or site. |
| b) |
Having an accumulative grade average equal or greater than 85, in a zero to one hundred scale or its equivalency in other scales, during their postgraduate program in the Virtual University, or in the previous academic level for newly enrolled students. |
Article 28.
Students wishing to take a subject from a different program or in other Tecnológico de Monterrey’s campus, while on intensive courses, must request the authorization from their program’s director.
Learning assessment
Article 29.
In master’s degree programs at the Virtual University, academic performance grades are reported at the end of the period.
Article 30.
Partial and end-of-program assessments may be done through examinations, research work reports or by presenting topics for discussion at seminars or similar media and written proof thereof there must always exist.
The subject’s professor will let students know about the form of assessment to be used at the beginning of each course and shall keep them informed about their performance throughout the course.
Article 31.
A proper balance between assessments must be sought so as to come to an end-of-course grade.
Article 32.
Partial and end-of-course assessments are mandatory and no student may be exempted from them.
Article 33.
For subjects calling for a written examination for end-of-course assessment, such examination shall be taken on the dates set forth in the Virtual University’s academic calendar.
Article 34.
Students who were entitled to take the end-of-course exam or an equivalent thereto and did not do so for a valid reason, may ask the program’s director for an assessment and have such assessment done at a different time. The right to request an end-of-course examination or an equivalent thereto at other than the regularly scheduled time expires 5 working days after the date when the examination should have been originally taken.
The end-of-course grade must be reported to the Office of School Services before the start of the subsequent academic period.
Article 35.
Assessments shall be expressed in a 1 – 100 grade scale including only whole numbers.
Article 36.
For courses where research work is done and course progress is left incomplete due to the nature of the work or due to causes beyond student control, the end-of-course assessment may be postponed and the grade shall be reported to the Office of School Services as IN (Incomplete). If the program is completed before the next regular enrollment date, the “IN” grade shall be replaced by the actual end-of-course grade; otherwise, the student must re-enroll on the course. The academic department shall determine the courses where the “IN” grade can be used.
Article 37.
The professor shall report end-of-course grades to the Office of School Services of the Virtual University by the date set forth for that purpose on the school calendar.
Article 38.
The minimum passing end-of-course grade is 70.
Article 39.
The student may ask his program’s director for a review of his end-of-course grades for the subjects he was enrolled on. The term to request such review expires five working days after the start of the subsequent school period.
The programs’ director shall appoint a committee in order to analyze the request and report its final decision - which will not be open to appeal - to the individual responsible for the Virtual University in the receiving campus or site, to the corresponding professor, to the student and to the Office of School Services of the Virtual University.
Students who are candidates for graduation, who request a review, may graduate only after a decision is made regarding the requested review.
A request for review shall not be admissible once the student has graduated.
Discharges
Article 40
Students may be partially and voluntarily discharged from one or several subjects and they shall not be deemed to have failed as set forth below:
| a) |
For quarterly programs, before completing the seventh week of the school calendar of the Virtual University for the academic period. |
| b) |
For semi-annual programs, before completing the tenth week of the school calendar of the Virtual University for the academic period. |
| c) |
For intensive summer programs, before completing the third week of the school calendar of the Virtual University for the academic period. |
Students shall carry out this process at the Office of School Services for his campus or site.
Article 41.
Students may be voluntarily discharged from all subjects no later than five working days prior to the last school day as set forth in the Virtual University’s school calendar. Subjects discharged under the above conditions are not deemed failed.
The process to be followed in order to be discharged from all subjects shall be accepted twice as a maximum after the following dates:
| a) |
The seventh week for quarterly programs, |
| b) |
The tenth week for semi-annual programs, |
| c) |
The third week, for intensive summer programs. |
If the student wishes to re-enroll, he/she shall apply for re-admission at the Office of School Services for his/her campus or site. The student’s academic performance shall be a factor for reentry.
Article 42.
When a student carries out the process to be discharged from all of the subjects he is taking for a given school period or if he fails to enroll for one or more periods, he shall be subject to the amendments made to the curriculum. The program’s director shall receive the requests from students wishing to re-enroll on Tecnológico de Monterrey after a voluntary absence and he shall assess the conditions for the student to re-enroll in keeping with this regulations. The student’s academic performance shall be a factor for reentry.
Article 43.
Students incurring in any of the following situations shall be discharged from Tecnológico de Monterrey on the grounds of poor academic performance:
| a) |
Students who fail one or more subjects in the specialization curriculum they are enrolled on or those failing two or more subjects in the master’s or doctor’s degree curriculum they are enrolled on. Previous or introductory courses the student might have failed shall not be taken into account. |
| b) |
Students getting end-of-course grades under 75 for two or more courses in the specialization curriculum they are enrolled on or three or more courses for master’s or doctor’s degree programs. Previous or introductory courses the student might have failed shall not be taken into account. |
Article 44.
Students accruing two academic dishonesty grades (DA) (see article 48) shall be discharged from Tecnológico de Monterrey on the grounds of academic dishonesty.
Article 45.
Students may apply for reentry into the Virtual University only once if they have incurred in any of the following situations:
| a) |
In the situation described in article 43 if they have no more than two subjects pending to pass in order to complete their postgraduate program. |
| b) |
In the situation described in article 43, paragraph b, provided they have not incurred in the situation described in article 43, paragraph a. |
The program’s director shall appoint a commission to go over such request. This commission shall determine, if applicable, the conditions for student reentry.
Students reentering shall be finally discharged if they do not meet the conditions set forth for reentry.
Requirements for Graduation
Article 46.
The requirements for achieving an academic degree from Tecnológico de Monterrey’s Virtual University are as follows:
| a) |
Taking and passing all of the subjects in their curriculum. Some such subjects may be accredited with studies pursued in other Institutions pursuant to the provisions of the section on revalidation. |
| b) |
For transferred students, having taken and passed at the Virtual University at least the last two subjects in the specialization curriculum, the four last subjects in the master’s degree program or the last half of the doctor’s degree program. |
| c) |
Preparing a research project, thesis or dissertation, for curricula including such a requisite; this must be submitted to a jury for review and acceptance. Such jury shall consist of a minimum of three members with an academic degree equal or higher than the degree being pursued by the student. One of the members shall be the consultant and at least one of the members shall be a member of Tecnológico de Monterrey’s academic community. |
| d) |
Achieving an end-of-course average grade for all of the subjects in the curriculum equal or above 80. In order to calculate such average all of the subjects taken by the student that are a part of the curriculum shall be taken into account, except the previous or introductory ones. In the case of students with revalidated or accredited subjects, the grade to be considered shall be the one stated in the corresponding official document. |
| e) |
Passing the general knowledge examinations based on the criteria required by the curricula requiring so. |
| f) |
Meeting the requirements regarding the achievement of specific grades in the curriculum being completed. |
Academic recognitions
Article 47.
An honorable mention of excellence shall be granted to master’s or doctor’s degree students who meet the following requirements:
| a) |
Having the highest end-of-course grade average in their campus. |
| b) |
Having achieved an end-of-course average grade equal or above 95. |
| c) |
Not having failed any subjects in their curriculum. |
| d) |
Having no DA assigned during their postgraduate program. |
In order to calculate the end-of-course average grade, all of the subjects taken by the student corresponding to his curriculum shall be considered, except the previous or introductory ones. In the case of students with revalidated or accredited subjects, the grade to be considered shall be the one stated in the corresponding official document.
Students who are not assigned to any campus shall be considered as a single group with regards to the application of this article.
Penalties for academic dishonesty
Article 48.
Individual or collective actions involving presenting other’s knowledge as one’s own shall be deemed academically dishonest, such as: Cheating at exams, homework, essays or projects, plagiarizing texts, omitting a quote or bibliographic source, substituting for someone at an exam, forging documents or data, submitting essays or projects prepared by a third party and any kind of action contrary to academic honesty at Tecnológico de Monterrey. Both the perpetrating student and the individual allowing the commission of such misdeed shall be held responsible.
Article 49.
When a professor becomes aware of an academically dishonest action as defined in the above article, he/she must proceed as follows:
| a) |
Document the event of academic dishonesty in writing. |
| b) |
Submit a written notice to the individual responsible for the Virtual University in the receiving campus or site, to the director of School Services of the Virtual University, to the director of the program the student belongs to, and to the student. |
| c) |
Assign the student an academic dishonesty degree using the initials DA in the assessment for the relevant activity or in the end-of-course assessment, depending of the severity of the misdeed. |
Article 50.
The student may request an appeal of the assigned DA grade through a petition submitted to his program’s director.
The term for appealing a DA grade is 20 working days after the student receives a written notice thereof.
The programs’ director shall appoint a committee in order to analyze the petition and report its final decision, which will not be open to appeal, to the individual responsible for the Virtual University in the receiving campus or site, to the corresponding professor, to the student and to the Office of School Services of the Virtual Office.
Article 51.
The student shall be finally discharged from Tecnológico de Monterrey if he/she accumulates two partial or end-of-course DA grades.
Article 52.
Students who get a written notice as a consequence of committing an act of academic dishonesty shall not be entitled to receiving an honorable mention.
General Provisions
Article 53.
These regulations come in force on August 1, 1996 and are applicable to all students enrolled on the Virtual University’s postgraduate programs.
Article 54.
These Regulations may be amended only by the Academic Senate of the Virtual University.
